『THE INDEPENDENT』のジャズ評論家でもあるジャーナリストPHIL JOHNSONによる1997年出版の書籍。所謂“ブリストル・サウンド”を、街の特性や歴史もふまえながら掘り起こしていく。特に日本では情報の少ない、90年以前のシーン（レゲエ／パンク／ヒップホップ）の様子が、当時の関係者の証言も交えて読めるのは極めて貴重。

1996年に刊行された『Straight Outa Bristol』(Phil Johnson著)は、当時の僕にとっては歴史の教科書のような本でした。インターネットがあまり普及していない時代に、あの町のことをきちんと理解していくのに最も役に立つ本でした。
でも数年後、レイ・マイティ(Smith & Mighty)をはじめ、本にも登場する何人かがその内容に怒っているという話を聞きました。...
