2. This Is Stranger Than Love (Dub)

1987年、HIPPODROMEというヴェニューの裏で開かれたAPRES-SKI PARTYで、SMITH & MIGHTYはERIC SATIE「GYMNOPEDIE NUMBER 1」のカヴァーを演奏する。そのステージをTRICKYと共に観ていたMARK STEWARTは、彼をステージに上げラップをさせ、自らも歌を乗せた。後にMARKはこのトラックのマスター（カセット・テープだったという）を500ポンドで買い上げ、映画『ウエストサイド物語』劇中歌「SOMEWHERE」の歌詞とメロディを引用し録音する。

ちょっと妙な話なんだけど、マークが曲を聴きたがってるんだと思ってそのカセットをあげたところ、ナント、彼はそのカセットからレコードをプレスしちゃったんだ。でももっと可笑しいのは、そのカセットの上に歌を重ねて入れたんでヒス・ノイズが凄いんだ（笑）。　――雑誌『remix』SMITH & MIGHTY interview (1991)

あれは最初、ライヴで演ったんだよな。マークと一緒にステージに立って、俺たちがバックを務めたんだ。そのときはトリッキーも呼んで、ヤツに歌わせようとしたんだよな。俺たちは歌えないしね。で、ライヴが終わった後、マークが「いいじゃないか！」って言ってて、気が付いたらマークのレコードに入っていたね。

The 'Stranger Than Love' thing came about through Steve Haley, who in 1987 put on this event round the back of the Hippodrome called Apres-Ski Party, which was the first time he persuaded Smith and Mighty to perform live. I was there with Tricky, who I'd known since he was at school, and Rob and Ray started playing their version of Satie's 'Gymnopedie Number 1', which I'd always loved and used to play. It was just another sense of synchronicity and I'd always checked Rob and Ray and respected the fact that they weren't pushy and they weren't trying to look at each other's trainers all the time. And I pushed Tricky on stage, which was the first time anybody got him to rap publicly, and the I started sunging as well, and something just clicked. And that tune just meant so much to me, even though it's more Ray and Rob's tune than it is mine. I changed it around to a certain extent, but it just happend, and it's difficult for me to analyse how things happened from a distance. But it was good.　――Mark Stewart on "Straight Outa Bristol"
